The Senate has appointed Senator Tony Nwoye as the new Minority Whip following a wave of defections that have further strengthened the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District, was unanimously selected by the Senate minority caucus to fill the position.
His appointment follows the defection of his predecessor, Senator Osita Ngwu, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
In a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Ngwu said his decision was driven by his desire to align with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu, describing the APC as the most stable political platform in the country.
Nwoye was elected to the Senate in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party before later moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2025.
In a related development, Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro (Gombe South) and Senator Aliyu Wadada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, also formally confirmed their defection to the APC.
Wadada, who has been endorsed as the APC consensus governorship candidate for Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 elections, said the formalities of his defection were concluded during Wednesday’s proceedings.
Reacting to the developments, Senator Adams Oshiomhole commended the lawmakers, saying their decisions were made peacefully and in line with constitutional provisions.
He added that the growing number of defections reflects increasing confidence in the leadership of the APC and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The latest movements bring the APC’s strength in the Senate to 91 members.
