A 59-kilogram fish has emerged as the biggest catch at the 61st edition of the Argungu International Fishing Festival, held in Argungu, Kebbi State.
The development was announced on Saturday by presidential aide Sunday Dare in a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the return of the iconic cultural event.
The record-breaking catch was made by Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area during the main fishing competition at the Matan Fada River. His feat earned him the top prize in the annual festival, which draws thousands of participants and tourists from within and outside Nigeria.
Abdullahi Garba from Argungu came second with a 40kg fish, while Nasir Garba and another contestant shared third place after each landing a 33kg catch.
Organisers disclosed that the overall winner will receive two vehicles, a cash prize of N1 million and other items. The runners-up will also go home with cash rewards and additional prizes.
Widely regarded as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage in northern Nigeria, the Argungu festival continues to attract widespread participation, reinforcing its status as one of the country’s most celebrated traditional events.
