The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, is expected to formally assume duties next week, just days before the crucial Anambra State governorship election slated for November 8.
Sources within the commission told The PUNCH that Amupitan’s assumption of office will follow his official swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu, a ceremony traditionally held during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. The next FEC meeting is expected to take place next week.
“Professor Amupitan will take over immediately after the President administers the oath of office,” a senior INEC official familiar with the transition process revealed. “It’s customary for the inauguration to occur before a Federal Executive Council meeting, after which he will be accompanied by INEC National Commissioners to resume at the headquarters.”
An INEC Director, who confirmed that preparations are in full swing for the leadership transition, explained that while the exact date has not been officially fixed, the inauguration is imminent.
“The moment he’s sworn in, he takes full charge of the commission,” the official stated.
Meanwhile, activities within INEC headquarters in Abuja indicate that staff are already making arrangements for Amupitan’s arrival, signalling a smooth handover ahead of the upcoming election.
