All seven Labour Party members of the House of Representatives from Enugu State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), giving the ruling party complete control of the state’s caucus in the lower chamber.

The defection is coming just over a year after the Labour Party’s sweeping victory in the 2023 general elections, where it won seven out of eight federal constituency seats in Enugu, leaving only one to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

With the latest defections, the APC now holds all eight seats in the Enugu House of Representatives caucus.

Speaking to journalists after the defection, the spokesperson for the lawmakers and member representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, said their decision was driven by the need to align with what he described as the “project-oriented and transformative governance” of Governor Peter Mbah.

Nnaji noted that Governor Mbah’s administration has demonstrated a commitment to infrastructural renewal, economic expansion, and human capital development — efforts he said deserve legislative support across party lines.

“Our defection is a collective decision to align with the progressive agenda of Governor Peter Mbah, whose vision for Enugu State is transforming lives. We believe this partnership will accelerate development and deliver more dividends of democracy to our people,” he said.
