Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup stage were shattered on Sunday after the Super Eagles fell 4-3 to DR Congo on penalties in the African play-off finale in Rabat, Morocco.
Both teams entered the tie chasing one last ticket to the intercontinental play-offs, having emerged as the strongest runners-up from the qualifying rounds. But after a tense duel and a dramatic shootout, it was the Congolese side that survived the night.
Coach Eric Chelle shook up his winning squad from the Gabon game, opting for Semi Ajayi in defence and Frank Onyeka in midfield, with Akor Adams and Bright Osayi-Samuel making way. Onyeka lined up alongside Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, while Ajayi’s arrival in central defence pushed the impressive Benjamin Fredrick to right-back.
The reshuffle paid off almost instantly. Onyeka justified his recall in the third minute, reacting quickest to a poor defensive clearance after a Zaidu Sanusi cross. His effort took a decisive deflection, leaving goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau helpless as Nigeria grabbed an early lead.
The Super Eagles could have doubled the advantage but wasted two promising opportunities, allowing DR Congo to grow into the contest. Their persistence was rewarded in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia found the equaliser, dragging the Leopards level and setting up a nerve-wracking battle that ultimately stretched into a penalty shootout.
Nigeria’s campaign ended in heartbreak, sealing a disappointing conclusion to their 2026 World Cup journey.
