Top leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its full weight behind Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, escalating the political conflict between the governor and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, affirmed the APC’s support for Fubara’s re-election bid, stating the governor has the party’s backing “for his re-election campaign.” He dismissed any notion of internal obstacles, asserting, “Nobody can frustrate any APC governor. Fubara, like other APC governors, is running the affairs of his state well.”
This endorsement follows Governor Fubara’s high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on December 9, a move widely seen as securing his political future for a second term. His crossover was mirrored by 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who also joined the ruling party.
Further solidifying Fubara’s new standing, the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, explicitly named him as the party’s leader in Rivers State. Speaking on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, Yilwatda stated, “Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State, but he would need to coordinate with every other person in the state.”
