The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, following a session on Thursday presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
The live broadcast of the plenary on Channels Television showed lawmakers leveling allegations of gross misconduct and constitutional breaches against the state’s top officials.
Majority Leader Major Jack read a formal notice of allegations against Governor Fubara, citing seven specific charges anchored on Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution. Among the accusations are the demolition of the Rivers State Assembly Complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and failure to comply with Supreme Court directives on the financial autonomy of the legislature.
Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart separately presented a notice of allegations against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh. A total of 26 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice against Governor Fubara, which the Assembly contends is justified by constitutional violations.
Speaker Amaewhule stated that the impeachment notice will be formally served to Governor Fubara within the next seven days, setting in motion a process that could lead to a vote on his removal from office.
