The Federal Government has finalized plans to implement a 40% salary increase for university academic staff and will formally sign the agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
According to a circular from the Federal Ministry of Education, all Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of federal universities have been invited to attend the signing ceremony, scheduled to hold at 11:00 a.m. at the Conference Hall of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in Abuja.
The document, dated January 5, 2026, and signed by the Director of University Education, Rakiya Ilyasu, on behalf of the Minister of Education, referenced number FME/IS/UNI/ASUU/C.11/Vol.V/82.
In the circular, the ministry described the agreement as a critical step toward promoting industrial harmony in the university system, improving teaching and learning conditions, and demonstrating the government’s commitment to sustainable development in education.
