The 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) culminated in a night of celebration and recognition on Sunday in Lagos, honoring the continent’s leading musical talents.
Among the standout victors were an array of Nigerian stars who secured the ceremony’s most prestigious accolades, showing the nation’s continued dominance in the African music scene.
The evening’s top performer was the sensational singer and songwriter Rema, who claimed an impressive trio of awards. His sweeping success included the coveted title of Artiste of the Year, along with wins for Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African Artiste in RnB and Soul.
Global superstar Burna Boy added another major honor to his distinguished career, securing the Album of the Year award for his acclaimed project ‘No Sign of Weakness’. He further clinched the Best African Collaboration award, sharing the recognition with fellow Nigerian act Shallipopi for their joint work.
Shallipopi himself enjoyed a monumental night, as his hit single ‘Laho’ was crowned Song of the Year. This public-voted award marked a significant milestone for the burgeoning artist, whose unique sound has captivated audiences across the continent.
Also, Veteran performer Yemi Alade was honored in the Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary category. She earned the award for her poignant contribution, ‘You Are’, featured in the animated superhero series Iyanu.
In hip-hop, renowned rapper Phyno emerged victorious as the Best African Artiste in African Hip-Hop, a testament to his enduring influence and lyrical prowess within the genre.
The awards also spotlighted promising new talent. The fast-rising singer Chella was celebrated as the African Fans’ Favourite, an award decided by ardent supporters across the continent. Meanwhile, the Most Promising Artiste of the Year title was awarded to the gifted young singer Qing Madi, who triumphed over a strong field of emerging contenders from various African nations.
