President Donald Trump has stated that Tehran has “no plan” to execute detained protesters, but emphasized that U.S. military action remains an option in response to Iran’s violent suppression of recent anti-government demonstrations.
The comments come amid heightened regional military precautions. Both the United States and the United Kingdom have reduced personnel at the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar, with U.S. officials describing the partial withdrawal as a “precautionary measure.”
Air travel disruptions further signaled escalating tensions, as Iran closed its airspace to nearly all flights for five hours overnight, prompting several international airlines to reroute flights around the country.
Diplomatic operations have also been adjusted, with the British Foreign Office announcing the temporary closure of its embassy in Tehran. The embassy will now function remotely until further notice.
The situation remains fluid as Western nations monitor Iran’s internal crackdown and recalibrate their military and diplomatic posture in the region.
