President Bola Tinubu has lauded the outstanding performance of Nigerian artists at a major continental awards ceremony, declaring their dominance as definitive evidence of the nation’s flourishing creative sector.
In an official statement, the President framed the artists’ success at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) as a milestone reflecting Nigeria’s expanding cultural influence and the global respect its music commands.
The prestigious awards ceremony, hosted by Lagos State from January 7th to 11th, 2026, saw Nigerian talent secure an array of top honors. The event solidified the country’s status as a powerhouse of African entertainment, following Lagos’s formal designation as the host city by the African Union Commission in April of the previous year.
A new generation of stars led the historic sweep. Afrobeats sensation Rema claimed the prestigious Artiste of the Year title, alongside awards for Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African RnB & Soul. In a testament to the industry’s depth, Burna Boy’s latest project earned Album of the Year, while Shallipopi’s hit collaboration with Burna Boy secured Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration.
Further wins came from Phyno (Best African Hip-Hop), Qing Madi (Most Promising Artiste), and Yemi Alade (Best Soundtrack).
Beyond the performance categories, the influence of industry veterans was also recognized. Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye, foundational figures in Nigerian entertainment, were honored with the AFRIMA Legendary Award. Singer Chella’s win for African Fans’ Favourite.
