U.S President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to impose punitive tariffs on European nations that oppose his longstanding campaign to acquire Greenland, declaring he will “100%” follow through on the threat.
The dispute centers on Trump’s unrelenting push for the United States to take control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory, which he describes as “imperative for National and World Security.” European allies have closed ranks in support of Greenland’s sovereignty, with Denmark’s foreign minister stating that the U.S. cannot “threaten his way to ownership.”
However, in a show of solidarity, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reiterated that Greenland’s future “is for Greenlanders and for the Danes alone” to decide. Despite the diplomatic pushback, Trump declined on Monday to rule out the use of force and insisted he would proceed with tariffs targeting the UK and seven other NATO-allied countries.
Under his proposed timeline, a 10% tariff would be levied on all goods entering the U.S. from these nations starting February 1, escalating to 25% on June 1, until an agreement is reached for Washington to purchase Greenland.
