A political analyst has asserted that while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, remains a powerful national figure, Governor Seyi Makinde maintains unequivocal and dominant control over the political landscape of Oyo State.
Speaking on ARISE TV’s Morning Show, political scientist Akinwunmi Akinfenwa provided a strategic assessment of the power dynamics within the Peoples Democratic Party and the Presidency’s positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Acknowledging Wike’s widespread influence, Akinfenwa drew a clear boundary at Oyo State. “Nyesom Wike has a lot of tentacles and is very strong politically,” he stated. “But when it comes to the politics of Ibadan and of Oyo State, we give it to His Excellency the Engineer, Seyi Makinde, no doubt about it. He is in full and firm control of PDP in Oyo State.”
When asked about President Bola Tinubu’s recent interventions in the Rivers State political crisis and his sustained alliance with Wike, Akinfenwa characterized the President’s approach as one of “political pragmatism” rather than personal sentiment, suggesting a calculated strategy aimed at broader national coalition-building ahead of the next electoral cycle.
