The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Yoruba actress Ajara Lasisi, widely known as Aunty Ajara.
Lasisi passed away in the early hours of Thursday, according to her family, bringing an end to days of public concern over her deteriorating health.
Her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, announced the news in an emotional video message, expressing gratitude to colleagues, fans and well-wishers who rallied around the actress during her final days.
“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Ridwan thanked members of the film industry and the general public for their prayers, support and generosity, including industry leaders and associations who stood by them during the difficult period.
He also made a public appeal for financial donations sent toward her medical care to stop immediately, noting that the purpose for which the funds were raised was no longer applicable.
“We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again,” he added.
Lasisi’s health challenges became public last week after fellow actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke raised an alarm over her condition. Oshodi-Oke disclosed that the actress had been hospitalized in critical condition, dependent on oxygen support, and undergoing intensive medical treatment that came at significant cost.
