The Senate is set to hold an emergency plenary session on Tuesday following mounting public anger over recent amendments to the Electoral Act, especially the removal of provisions requiring the real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The unusual sitting comes barely days after lawmakers passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, a move that has sparked widespread criticism across the country.
Civil society groups, opposition politicians, labour unions, professional associations, regional leaders and youth groups have all condemned the decision, with some protesters taking their grievances directly to the National Assembly complex.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio is expected to chair the session, which will bring together 105 senators as the chamber seeks to respond to the growing pressure and clarify its position on the controversial amendment.
The Senate’s current membership has been reduced following recent developments.
