Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai was released on Wednesday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after days of questioning at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
However, shortly after regaining his freedom, he was reportedly taken into custody by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
Sources within the EFCC confirmed on Wednesday night that El-Rufai had been released but was subsequently picked up by officials of the anti-corruption body.
“We have released him today, but he was shortly picked up after he was released by ICPC,” an EFCC source disclosed.
El-Rufai had arrived at the EFCC headquarters around 10 a.m. on Monday in response to an invitation for questioning and remained in the commission’s custody until Wednesday.
Attempts to obtain official confirmation from the ICPC were unsuccessful, as calls to its spokesperson, John Odey, were not answered at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the former governor’s counsel, A. U. Mustapha (SAN), declined to either confirm or refute the development when contacted.
