The Ekiti State University Alumni Association UK & Ireland has called on its members to take a more active role in leadership, governance, and community development as part of efforts to strengthen institutions and promote responsible public service.

This call was made during a recent virtual edition of the association’s “Community in Conversations” series themed “40 Years of Alumni: The Journey So Far.” The interactive session formed part of activities leading up to the association’s forthcoming 40th anniversary, bringing alumni together for an engaging and reflective discussion on leadership, civic participation, and the responsibility of alumni in society.

This was contained in a statement signed by Gbolahan Charles Oloye, Publicity Secretary of the EKSU Alumni Association UK & Ireland.

The event featured Councillor Akin Elekolusi, a councillor in Stevenage, United Kingdom, under the Labour Party, who served as the guest speaker. In his remarks, he encouraged alumni and members of the wider community to participate more actively in governance, noting that joining political parties and engaging in decision-making processes allows citizens to have a voice and contribute meaningfully to societal development.

Councillor Elekolusi also emphasised the importance of strong institutions and sound governance structures, warning that progress cannot be sustained where foundational systems are weak. He likened fragile institutions to “building on sand,” stressing that societies can only grow where strong and accountable structures are in place. He further highlighted the role of integrity in leadership, noting that one corrupt individual within an institution can damage the credibility and effectiveness of the entire organisation.

The session was expertly anchored by Mr Duro Payne, whose thoughtful moderation kept the discussion engaging and insightful. Two pioneer members of the alumni community also shared reflections on their journeys, speaking about how Ekiti State University (EKSU) played a significant role in shaping their personal growth, professional development, and global outlook.

Participants described the session as interactive, enlightening, and inspiring, with many noting that it reinforced the importance of alumni engagement in civic life and community development.

The association also reminded members that as ambassadors of their alma mater, they carry the values and reputation of Ekiti State University wherever they go. Members were encouraged to remain mindful of their conduct, maintain good standing in their professional and personal lives, and continue to give back meaningfully to society and to the university community.

While reflecting on the progress of the association, members also praised the current Executive Committee, describing them as a forward-thinking team that has continued to guide the alumni body in the right direction and strengthen the sense of unity among members.

As the association approaches its 40-year milestone, it reaffirmed its commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue, strengthening connections among alumni, and encouraging members to play an even greater role in promoting good governance, professional excellence, and community development.
