The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has said an engine anomaly triggered the emergency diversion of an Arik Air Boeing 737-700 aircraft during a scheduled flight on February 11, 2026.
The bureau disclosed this in its preliminary report on the serious incident involving the aircraft with nationality and registration marks 5N-MJF, operated by Arik Air Limited.
According to NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Arowojobe, the aircraft was en route from Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Obafemi Awolowo International Airport when the flight crew reported an abnormal engine event.
The development prompted the activation of emergency procedures and a diversion to Benin City, the nearest suitable airport.
NSIB stated that the aircraft landed safely and that all passengers and crew members on board disembarked without injuries.
The bureau noted that investigations into the incident are ongoing, with further technical examinations underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the engine anomaly.
It added that the information contained in the preliminary report is subject to further review and is available for public download on the NSIB website.
