The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike beginning May 1.

In a joint letter dated April 30, the unions said the industrial action would commence at midnight, citing the Federal Government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a fresh offer on staff allowances.

The letter was signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim.

According to the unions, the decision followed months of stalled discussions over welfare issues affecting non-academic staff in Nigerian universities and allied institutions.

While acknowledging the government’s withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 percent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance, the unions said the move failed to address the core concerns of their members.

“While the withdrawal of the circular is noted, no new offer has been presented to replace the 30 percent allowance earlier proposed,” the statement said.

The JAC maintained that the absence of a revised proposal leaves workers with no option but to proceed with the strike, warning that the action would continue indefinitely until their demands are met.
