Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to growing calls for him to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying leadership and presidential ambition should not be treated lightly.
Jonathan made the remarks while receiving youth groups who visited his office in Abuja to urge him to return to the presidential race ahead of the next general election.
Responding to the appeal, the former president said contesting for the nation’s highest office was “not a computer game,” stressing that such a decision required deep reflection and broad consultations.
He noted that leadership demands serious commitment and careful consideration, adding that he would continue consulting before making any political decision regarding 2027.
Jonathan also urged Nigerian youths to support peaceful and credible elections, warning that the lack of transparent electoral processes discourages capable and qualified individuals from actively participating in politics.
The former president further expressed concern over Nigeria’s low voter turnout, describing it as one of the weakest participation rates despite the country’s large population of eligible voters.
He also spoke about the negative perception of Nigerians abroad, attributing part of the problem to leadership challenges and governance failures over the years.
Jonathan, however, maintained that he had only listened to the requests from the youth groups and had not taken any final decision concerning the 2027 presidential election.
“You ask me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game, but I have heard you, and I will consult widely.”
