National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted a massive shipment of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 4,173.5 kilogrammes and valued at more than ₦10.4 billion at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the seizure followed weeks of intelligence gathering, surveillance, and tracking of the shipping container, which originated from Toronto on March 28 and was reportedly transloaded multiple times before arriving in Nigeria.
The container arrived at the Lagos port by rail on May 9, with the drugs hidden inside two vehicles; a used Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300, packed within the container.
The latest interception comes just days after NDLEA operatives raided a mansion in Lekki allegedly used as a drug stash house, where officers recovered 2,326 kilogrammes of the same psychoactive substance valued at over ₦5.8 billion.
Speaking during the handover of the seized drugs by the Nigeria Customs Service, the NDLEA Director of Seaports Operations, Ibinabo Archie-Abia, described the operation as proof of the success of intelligence-led policing and collaboration between security agencies in tackling organised transnational crime.
NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Marwa also commended officers involved in the operation, saying the recent seizures point to coordinated attempts by international drug cartels to flood Nigeria with synthetic cannabis products.
