United States President Donald Trump has cautioned against any formal declaration of independence by Taiwan, a position that comes amid continuing tensions surrounding relations between Taiwan and China.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with Fox News on Friday following the conclusion of a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
“I’m not looking to have somebody go independent,” Trump said while addressing the issue of Taiwan’s political status.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has previously maintained that Taiwan does not need to formally declare independence because it already regards itself as a sovereign entity.
The United States has for decades maintained a delicate balancing position on the issue. While Washington is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with means of self-defence, it has also sought to preserve diplomatic ties with China under its long-standing “One China” policy.
Trump had earlier stated that he had “made no commitment either way” regarding Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory and has repeatedly said could be brought under its control by force if necessary.
The comments come as debate over Taiwan’s sovereignty continues to generate diplomatic sensitivity between Washington and Beijing.
