The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers in compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Friday by Mohammed Haruna, who said the submissions were completed two days before the extended deadline of May 10, 2026.
According to the commission, the submission process followed an extension granted after political parties expressed concerns over the original timeline during a meeting held on March 24, 2026.
Haruna explained that the commission reviewed the schedule to ensure it aligned with the requirements of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the dates fixed by political parties for their primary elections.
“The submission followed the extension granted by the Commission after political parties raised concerns regarding the timeline provided in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement noted.
He added that under the revised arrangements, political parties were permitted to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
The INEC commissioner further stated that the law requires parties to submit their membership registers not later than 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries.
