THE Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has said the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin is crucial to safeguarding democracy and ensuring regional stability.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu disclosed this on Monday during the opening of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Abuja.
According to him, the deployment under the banners of Operation Atileyin Alaafia 1 and 2 reflected Nigeria’s commitment to fortifying the security architecture of the West African sub-region and mounting collective responses to emerging cross-border threats.
He noted that maintaining stability in neighboring countries is directly linked to Nigeria’s internal security and consequently have continued to disrupt criminal networks, degrade adversary capabilities, and restore relative calm in previously volatile areas.
