Residents and community leaders in Itokin have welcomed the ongoing reconstruction of the long-neglected Itokin Road, describing the project as a major relief after years of hardship.

Speaking during an interview, the Head of the Raji Family, Raji Rasheed Olakiitan, said the road which was constructed in 1971 by the Gowon administration had remained in a deplorable condition, severely affecting economic and social activities in the area.

“I sold my car to purchase land in another area when this Itokin Road was in a deplorable state.

This road is very important because it links communities such as Ijebu in Ogun State, Ibefun, Ikorodu and other parts of eastern Nigeria.”

According to him, the poor state of the road caused significant losses for residents and businesses, particularly farmers and traders who depended on the route for transportation.

“The community suffered devastating losses because of the bad road.

Farmers could not move their produce to markets, travelers avoided the route, and the area was almost completely forgotten.”

Olakiitan expressed appreciation to senator representing Lagos EastAdetokunbo Abiru, member house of representatives, Wale Raji and LCDA chairman, Ikosi-Ejirin, Wale Raji Anamo who facilitated the reconstruction project.

“I appreciate the leaders in Ikosi-Ejirin, members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and President Bola Tinubu for choosing to fix this road.”

He noted that although construction work is still ongoing, the impact is already being felt across the community as economic activities gradually return.

“With the renovation that has taken place in recent days, economic activities have resurfaced and people are beginning to enjoy relief. We believe the contractors and government will complete the project as soon as possible.”

While commending the road project, the community leader also appealed for additional infrastructure to support development in the area.

“We also need electricity and a police station in Itokin to improve security and enhance the welfare of residents.”

Residents say the reconstruction of the Itokin Road is expected to boost trade, improve connectivity and accelerate development across communities that rely on the strategic route.
