Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent build-up of refuse in some communities.

The governor disclosed this in a statement, assuring residents that agencies responsible for environmental sanitation have intensified efforts to clear waste backlogs and restore cleanliness across affected neighbourhoods.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources are currently working around the clock to address the situation.

He said additional trucks and personnel have been deployed to accelerate waste evacuation and improve collection services across the state.

The governor noted that residents should already be noticing improvements in waste clearance operations, adding that the government remains committed to ensuring that Lagos is completely cleaned up.

“LAWMA, LASEPA, and the Ministry of Environment are currently working around the clock. We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the scale of the challenge, revealing that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tons of waste daily, making effective waste management a continuous and demanding task.

Despite the volume of waste generated, the governor expressed confidence that the state government would overcome the current challenges through sustained intervention and collaboration with residents.

He also called on Lagosians to support the cleanup efforts by properly bagging their waste and refraining from dumping refuse on roads or in drainage channels.

“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership.

Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” he said.

The governor reassured residents that the government remains fully committed to resolving the issue and maintaining a cleaner and safer environment across the state.

“We are fully on top of this situation. Let us work together to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone,” Sanwo-Olu added.
