The Federal Government has assured Nigerians living in South Africa that all citizens who have expressed willingness to return home amid ongoing anti-migrant attacks will be evacuated before the June 30 deadline.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, gave the assurance in a statement on Thursday, reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
According to the minister, the administration of President Bola Tinubu is taking necessary steps to ensure that no Nigerian willing to return from South Africa is left behind.
She disclosed that the evacuation process is already in progress, with the first batch of 258 Nigerians successfully airlifted from South Africa on June 11.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that the government is working closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the safe return of all registered citizens.
She revealed that about 1,000 Nigerians have so far registered for evacuation from South Africa following reports of anti-migrant attacks and growing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in parts of the country.
The minister said arrangements are being finalized to transport the remaining Nigerians back home before the June 30 deadline.
“The Tinubu administration remains committed to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad and will ensure that no citizen willing to return from South Africa is left behind,” she stated.
The Federal Government has continued to monitor developments in South Africa while providing support and assistance to affected Nigerians as part of efforts to safeguard their welfare and security.
