The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application seeking to halt the revocation of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order in a brief ruling on Monday, directing that Sowore remain in custody until the court determines his motion for a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
The court also dismissed an earlier application by Sowore seeking Justice Umar’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.
Following the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application challenging the bail revocation order and bench warrant.
The motion for stay of execution was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Justice Umar had on June 16 revoked the bail previously granted to Sowore after he failed to appear before the court for the continuation of his trial.
The judge also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and subsequently issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
Sowore is being prosecuted by the DSS over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu.
The charge stems from posts published on his X and Facebook accounts in which he allegedly described the President as “a criminal.
