Ndidi close to equaling best goal tally

Wilfred Ndidiis on the brink of matching his personal best goal tally in a single season when he makes his 30th Championship appearance for Leicester City against Southampton on Tuesday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Ndidi recently notched his fifth goal of the season on his 270th appearance for the club in a thrilling 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion in a Midlands derby last Saturday, which helped propel Leicester to the top of the English Championship table.

The 27-year-old midfielder, currently ranked third in assists for the club with six, has found the back of the net five times in 33 appearances across all competitions this campaign.

The Nigerian’s best-ever tally in Europe since he arrived in 2014 was during the 2016/17 season, when he scored six goals in 57 games for Belgian side Genk and Leicester.

Ndidi scored twice over two legs against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League in the colours of Genk, one in the Belgian Cup and when he joined Leicester in the winter transfer of the season under review, he hit target three times for the Foxes.

He also scored twice in the Premier League (against Stoke City and Watford) and once in the FA Cup against Derby County in the fourth round.

The game against Southampton will be his 30th in the Championship season and he has notched three goals and made five assists playing in a move attacking role for the Foxes.

Leicester lead the EFL log with 91 points from 43 games and a win against the Saints could boost their chances of celebrating promotion with two games left to play.

The game will also offer Nigerian duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Joe Aribo opportunities to add to their goals this season. Iheanacho, who has seen only 45 minutes of league action in 2024, will hope to benefit from Enzo Maresca’s rotation as Jamie Vardy rarely starts two games in a row.

But Iheanacho faces stiff competition from Patson Daka and Tom Cannon. Daka has more goals (seven) and assists (five) than him. Aribo on his part, has scored four times in 32 league games and will aim to score in consecutive games for the first time this season.
