Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to send co-hosts Canada into the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa.
With the contest seemingly destined for extra time, Eustaquio produced the game’s defining moment in the second minute of added time, firing a superb low shot from the edge of the penalty area beyond the goalkeeper to seal a memorable victory for Jesse Marsch’s side.
The hard-fought encounter offered few clear-cut chances, with both teams struggling to create meaningful opportunities in a scrappy affair. However, Canada’s persistence paid off when Eustaquio’s late strike sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters.
The victory continues an impressive World Cup campaign for Canada, who had never won a match in six previous appearances at the tournament before this year’s competition. Their remarkable turnaround began with a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar on June 18, and they have now become the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage.
Canada will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 in Houston on Saturday, July 4, as they continue their dream run on home soil.
Following the final whistle, an emotional Marsch gathered his players in a huddle and hailed their achievement, telling them: “You are Canadian heroes. The future of the sport in this country is huge because of you.”
For South Africa, the defeat brought a disappointing end to their campaign despite finishing second in Group A. They struggled to impose themselves throughout the match, managing only one shot on target and appearing content to play for extra time before Eustaquio’s dramatic late winner dashed their hopes.
