Lionel Messi has expressed his heartbreak after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting that the pain of losing the title would “take time to heal.”
Spain reclaimed the world title after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time, ending Argentina’s reign as champions and denying Messi a second World Cup crown.
The defeat marked Messi’s second loss in a World Cup final, having also finished runner-up when Argentina were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 final. At 39, the football icon has yet to clarify whether he will continue his international career, with the 2030 World Cup likely to be his final realistic opportunity if he chooses to play on.
In a message shared on social media, Messi reflected on the disappointment while thanking Argentine fans for their unwavering support.
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things,” he wrote.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner praised his teammates for reaching a second consecutive World Cup final and highlighted the unity the team inspired across Argentina throughout the tournament.
“It is hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.”
Messi also congratulated Spain on their triumph.
The Argentine captain enjoyed another remarkable World Cup campaign, finishing with eight goals and four assists. He inspired dramatic comeback victories over Egypt and England in the knockout rounds before Argentina’s title defence ended against a disciplined Spanish side that conceded just one goal throughout the tournament.
Midfielder Enzo Fernández also paid tribute to the team, saying the players defended Argentina “with pride, humility and commitment.”
Meanwhile, FIFA has launched an investigation into post-match altercations involving players and officials from both teams after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium.
The world football governing body confirmed that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents, which involved several Argentina players, including Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, as well as assistant coach Roberto Ayala.
Any individuals found guilty of misconduct could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) could also be sanctioned.
Initial reports suggested Paredes had been sent off for an altercation with Spain defender Eric García, but FIFA later clarified that no red card was ultimately issued and no on-field disciplinary action was taken at the time.
The investigation will determine whether further sanctions are warranted following the heated scenes that overshadowed the conclusion of the World Cup final.
