Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has described former governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, as a leader he holds in high esteem, saying he is closely following in his footsteps despite their recent political differences.
Speaking at the burial service of Mrs Sabainah Opawole, mother of Yeye Olufunke Daniel, in Abeokuta, Abiodun publicly acknowledged Daniel’s contributions to Ogun State and paid tribute to his leadership.
The governor’s remarks come months after both leaders clashed over the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ogun East senatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 general election. Daniel had opposed the party’s consensus arrangement in favour of Abiodun before later withdrawing from the contest.
The burial service witnessed a brief political disruption as supporters of PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu and Senator Solomon Adeola exchanged chants promoting their respective 2027 governorship ambitions. Calm was restored after Daniel appealed to the supporters.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former First Lady Bola Obasanjo, Senator Solomon Adeola, Ladi Adebutu, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo and Senator Shuaib Salisu.
