United Nigeria Airlines has temporarily suspended all flight operations to and from Benin Airport following the closure of the airport’s runway by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The airline announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the suspension would remain in effect until the runway is declared safe and reopened for operations.
The development follows an incident in which an aircraft veered off the runway shortly after landing at Benin Airport. The occurrence prompted aviation authorities to shut the runway to allow for aircraft recovery operations and comprehensive safety assessments.
In its statement, United Nigeria Airlines said the closure had made it impossible to continue flight operations into and out of the airport.
“We wish to inform our valued passengers and the general public that, due to the closure of the runway by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) as a result of an excursion, all our flights to and from Benin Airport have been cancelled pending its reopening,” the airline stated.
The carrier apologised to passengers affected by the disruption and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the cancellations.
It also advised travellers with scheduled flights to contact its customer service team for updates, rebooking options and other travel assistance while the runway remains closed.
