Lando Norris produced a commanding drive to win the Hungarian Grand Prix, describing the performance as one of the finest of his Formula 1 career as he closed the first half of the season on a high.

The reigning world champion delivered an impressive display for McLaren, capitalising on a competitive car to secure victory after a challenging start to the campaign.

Having started from pole position, Norris initially led into the opening corner but briefly surrendered the lead after running wide at Turn Two, allowing teammate Oscar Piastri to move ahead.

Despite the early setback, the British driver remained confident of reclaiming the lead, convinced his race pace was superior.

“It wasn’t my finest Turn Two,” Norris admitted after the race. “But after that, seeing what my pace was like and I was just better in every sense, in terms of degradation and pace, I was convinced I could still win the race.”

With overtaking notoriously difficult at the Hungaroring, Norris urged his team to consider an alternative strategy that could put him back in contention.

The opportunity came midway through the race when McLaren brought Piastri into the pits to cover Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who had stopped earlier for fresh tyres. The strategy handed Norris clear air, allowing him to produce a series of blistering laps that proved decisive.

Piastri’s hopes of retaining the lead were further damaged after a collision with Carlos Sainz while lapping the Williams driver. Although frustrated by the incident, the Australian directed his anger at Sainz rather than McLaren’s strategy.

McLaren executed the remainder of the race almost flawlessly, while Ferrari, widely tipped as the pre-race favourite, endured a disappointing afternoon. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur admitted the Italian outfit made “too many mistakes,” costing them a chance to challenge for victory.

Norris’ triumph was widely regarded as one of the most convincing performances of the Formula 1 season, reinforcing McLaren’s resurgence and providing the Briton with renewed momentum heading into the second half of the championship.
