Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has accused former governor Gboyega Oyetola of allegedly using President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name to harass and intimidate his administration ahead of the state’s governorship election.
Adeleke said President Tinubu had assured him that the Osun governorship election would be free and fair, adding that the President contacted him after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) froze the state government’s account.
According to the governor, Tinubu expressed embarrassment over the development and told him that he did not authorise the freezing of the account.
The Osun governor, however, alleged that Oyetola, whom he described as the President’s cousin, was behind what he characterised as a series of harassment and witch-hunt against his administration.
“I can tell you that it is the President’s cousin, former governor Gboyega Oyetola, that is behind all these harassment and witch-hunt. He is using the President’s name to commit atrocities, controlling security forces in the state. We will resist him and his cohorts,” Adeleke said.
The allegations come amid heightened political tension in Osun State ahead of the governorship election. The EFCC had earlier frozen an Osun State Government account, a move Adeleke described as unlawful and which his administration said it would challenge in court.
Davido Appeals to Trump
Meanwhile, Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and a cousin of Governor Adeleke, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the situation in Osun State ahead of the election.
In a message posted on X, Davido expressed concerns over rising political tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation or disruption of the electoral process.
He called on the United States and the international community to closely monitor the election and urged relevant authorities to protect voters and ensure that every vote is respected.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election. There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process.”
Davido added that the people of Osun State should be able to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and peacefully.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.”
The singer’s appeal comes days before the Osun governorship election, amid growing calls for a peaceful and credible electoral process. Recent reports confirm that Davido has called for international attention to the poll and expressed concern about possible violence and disruption.
Davido also tagged Trump’s X account, @realDonaldTrump, in the post.
The allegations made by Governor Adeleke against Oyetola have not been independently established in this report, and Oyetola would have the opportunity to respond to the claims.
