Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-West, aimed at providing nutritious food to vulnerable children under six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
The South-West launch, held in Makun, Sagamu, Ogun State, makes the region the fourth geopolitical zone where the programme has been inaugurated. Mrs Tinubu said the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and is designed to strengthen food security, improve health outcomes and support vulnerable households across the country.
She described the programme as a deliberate and sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition, noting that it would ensure easier access to healthy and nourishing food for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. The First Lady commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and his wife, Bamidele Abiodun, for establishing three food banks in Sagamu, Yewa North and Abeokuta.
Mrs Tinubu also acknowledged the efforts of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Muyi Aina, for supporting the implementation of the initiative and promoting the welfare of vulnerable mothers and children.
During her visit, the First Lady commissioned the Muhammadu Buhari Housing Estate in Kobape, Ogun State. The estate, located along the Oke-Mosan-Kobape Express Road, comprises 108 housing units and is expected to provide decent, smart and affordable accommodation for residents.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who spoke at the commissioning, thanked the First Lady for the visit and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit through the provision of affordable homes. He said the state government would continue to expand access to decent housing and improve living conditions for residents.
Mrs Tinubu also commissioned the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence as part of her engagements in the state. She further held a meeting with traditional rulers, during which she underscored the importance of collective efforts in promoting development and improving the welfare of the people.
