Dolly Parton was an American singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist whose career spanned more than six decades. Following her recent passing at the age of 80, tributes have poured in celebrating the life and legacy of the country music icon.

Early Television Career
Parton’s television career began remarkably early. In 1956, at just 10 years old, she appeared on the Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour, having previously performed on Cas Walker’s radio show.
Her major television breakthrough came in 1967, when Porter Wagoner invited her to join The Porter Wagoner Show. Parton appeared in 218 episodes between 1967 and 1975, a period that helped establish her as a major entertainment star.
In 1976, she launched her own variety series, Dolly!, which ran for one season. She also became a popular guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, beginning in 1977, and appeared in numerous television specials.
Parton later returned to the variety-show format with Dolly in 1987, although the series also lasted only one season.

Hollywood Breakthrough With 9 to 5
Parton made her theatrical film debut in 1980 with 9 to 5, playing secretary Doralee Rhodes alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
The film became a major commercial success and marked the beginning of Parton’s successful screen career.
She followed it with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 1982, playing Miss Mona, and Rhinestone in 1984, where she starred opposite Sylvester Stallone.

Parton remained active on television throughout the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in productions including A Smoky Mountain Christmas (1986), Wild Texas Wind (1991), Unlikely Angel (1996) and Blue Valley Songbird (1999).

Parton Moves Behind the Camera
Parton eventually expanded her role in the entertainment industry by taking on more responsibilities as a producer and narrator.
She produced and narrated Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors in 2015 and its sequel, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, in 2016.
In 2019, she partnered with Netflix for Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, an eight-episode anthology series inspired by her songs.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors has a 78% critics’ score, while 9 to 5 holds a 70% Tomatometer score and a 74% audience score.

Awards and Recognition
Parton received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in 9 to 5 and an Academy Award nomination for writing the film’s title song.
Her television work also earned significant recognition. Christmas on the Square won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

Parton’s individual acting salaries were rarely disclosed publicly, making it difficult to establish exactly how much she earned from her screen career.
