The founder of Christ Apostolic Church, Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain, Prophet Sam Olu Alo, has questioned the level of transparency surrounding funds saved from the removal of petroleum subsidy.
Olu Alo said the uncertainty surrounding the policy was understandable because Nigerians had yet to see enough visible benefits that could be directly linked to the resources generated from subsidy removal.
Speaking at the grand finale of the church’s annual meeting, tagged “Sure Mercy of David,” the cleric cautioned Nigerians against political campaigns promising to restore petroleum subsidy.
According to him, major presidential candidates in the 2023 elections agreed to the removal of the subsidy, and attempts to reverse the policy at this stage should therefore be carefully scrutinised by the public.
Olu Alo, however, said his position did not amount to an endorsement of the way the policy had been implemented.
He stressed the need for greater transparency regarding the funds generated through subsidy removal and how such resources are being deployed.
The cleric said the absence of clearly visible benefits had contributed to public scepticism about the policy.
He urged the government to communicate more clearly with Nigerians and demonstrate how the resources saved are being used to improve citizens’ welfare.
