The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep appreciation to its Electoral Committee for the sacrifice and dedication shown in the lead-up to the now-suspended Elective Congress, following the dramatic resignation of the Federation’s entire leadership.
In a letter dated 28th August 2026, the Acting General Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ukpeme, MON, commended the Committee chaired by an unnamed official for accepting the “onerous task” of overseeing the election process despite their demanding professional commitments.
The letter, addressed to the Chairman of the NFF Electoral Committee, acknowledged the “seismic” impact of the resignations of the President, General Secretary, and entire Executive Committee, which were announced at a press conference on Thursday, 27th August 2026.
The development brought an abrupt halt to the electoral process ahead of the previously scheduled 27th September 2026 Elective Congress.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since directed structural reforms, meaning the Congress of Nigeria Football no longer stands as constituted. The reform process is expected to begin with Local Council elections.
An interim administration has been put in charge of the NFF Secretariat, and a Normalization Committee is to be established in the coming days, following consultations with world football governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The letter praised the Electoral Committee’s sincerity, assiduity, and diligence, noting that the unexpected halt to the process was not of the making of those currently managing the NFF Secretariat.
“Mr. Chairman, the sacrifice and service of yourself and other Members of the Committee to Nigeria Football will never be forgotten,” the letter read.
