The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disengaged some street sweepers, their supervisors and the service provider responsible for them after an investigation linked them to indiscriminate waste dumping along the Oworonshoki-Beger axis of Lagos.
The decision followed sustained surveillance and investigations by the Authority into the median, which had been identified as a recurring waste blackspot in the area.
Speaking on the development at the weekend, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the affected sweepers confessed to engaging in the illegal dumping of waste.
Gbadegesin said the sweepers, their supervisors and the service provider had consequently been removed from the cleaning operation.
He explained that the action was necessary to reinforce LAWMA’s commitment to maintaining high standards across the state’s waste-management operations.
According to him, personnel and service providers engaged by the Authority are expected to uphold the required environmental standards and must not contribute to the very challenges they were contracted to address.
The LAWMA boss stressed that the Authority would continue to monitor its operations and take appropriate action against individuals or contractors found violating established waste-management regulations.
He reiterated the need for all stakeholders involved in the cleaning and waste-management operations across Lagos to work in line with the Authority’s standards and contribute to keeping the state clean.
