The Edo State Police Command has ordered a discreet investigation into a viral video showing an altercation between officers of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The video, which has sparked reactions on social media, also shows an IRT officer firing his rifle into the air during the confrontation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, has interviewed representatives of both parties and directed a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Daaor also ordered that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review.
The command said it would not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by its personnel.
It added that any officer found culpable at the end of the investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with extant laws and regulations.
The police further stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration and mutual respect among security and government agencies, noting that effective public safety depends on professional cooperation.
While describing the incident as serious, the command said it would not affect the existing working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA.
