The Lagos State Government has announced plans to detain traders who sell goods by the roadside, with offenders expected to pay a fine of N90,000 when apprehended.
Speaking on Adamimogo 93.1 FM, the Iyaloja-General of Kosofe, Chief Mrs B.B. Balogun, said the government had continued to engage traders on the dangers of roadside trading.
She said despite weekly meetings held every Thursday to address the issue, some traders still return to the roads to display and sell their goods.
A resident welcomed the proposed enforcement, urging the government to take stronger action against roadside trading, which he said had contributed to the loss of lives.
Another resident, however, raised concerns about the activities of ticket collectors operating along the roads, saying their presence could also expose traders to danger.
The resident called for better regulation of ticket collection and greater accountability among those operating in the area.
Another resident urged the government to provide uniforms or proper identification for tax and revenue collectors to make it easier for members of the public to distinguish authorised government officials.
The resident said proper identification would also make it easier to monitor the activities of revenue collectors and prevent impersonation.
The development comes as the Lagos State Government intensifies efforts to regulate roadside trading and promote a safer and more organised system of market activities across the state.
