The Oyo State Government has urged residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices and desist from activities that could worsen environmental pollution across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, gave the warning on Friday during a press briefing in Ibadan to commemorate the 2026 World Cleanup Day.
Aderinto stressed the need for residents to take responsibility for the waste they generate, warning against indiscriminate disposal of refuse in waterways, roadsides and other public spaces.
He said improper waste handling remained a major environmental challenge, with consequences for public health, food security and the overall cleanliness of communities.
The Commissioner urged residents to make use of authorised waste collectors and comply with the state government’s One House, One Bin Policy, which requires households to have properly sized waste bins and register with approved waste collection operators.
He said the government was strengthening house-to-house waste collection through collaboration with Community Development Associations and waste contractors.
Aderinto also urged residents to report waste collectors who fail to provide services after registration, preferably through written complaints to the ministry.

He said government efforts to achieve cleaner cities would only succeed with the cooperation of residents, stressing that environmental cleanliness must be treated as a shared responsibility.
The Commissioner called on residents to handle the waste they generate with consciousness and intentionality as the state joins the rest of the world to mark World Cleanup Day.
