The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two women, aged 48 and 50, over the alleged production of adulterated fruit juice in Badagry, Lagos State.
The suspects were arrested following a five-day surveillance operation conducted by the NSCDC in collaboration with an Army formation in the area, according to a statement issued by the Command’s Civil Defence Public Relations Officer, SC Oluwaseun Abolurin.
The statement said the suspects were allegedly producing a fruit drink branded “Barkas Juice” using water, artificial flavourings, sweeteners, colourants and other additives.
Items recovered during the operation included a truck, cartons of the suspected adulterated juice, production machinery, chemicals, drums and a gas cylinder.
The NSCDC said the product was allegedly manufactured under unhygienic conditions and distributed to markets in Lagos, Benin City and other parts of the country.
The Corps also alleged that the product was being distributed using a purportedly fake NAFDAC registration number, 01-2166L.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Lagos State Command, Adedotun Keshinro, said the suspects would undergo further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
The Corps urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of the production or distribution of adulterated food and beverages to the appropriate authorities.
