Niger State government has commenced the airlift of intending pilgrims from the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, to Saudi Arabia for the 2024 hajj.

More than 400 intending pilgrims, including State officials, were airlifted from the state capital to the holy land as the first batch.

Addressing the intending pilgrims before departure, Governor Umaru Bago urged them to pray fervently for the State in particular and the Country in general for peace and prosperity.

He also advised them to be good ambassadors of the State and the Country while in the holy land, explaining that the State Government has already paid 200 dollars per pilgrim for Ram slaughtering (Hidiya) and urged them to desist from spending extravagantly.

Governor Bago also encouraged them to channel any challenge they might encounter to the State Amirul Hajj or to the Chairman of the Hajj Commission.

The Governor used the opportunity to appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for being instrumental in the completion of the airport terminal, which he said has paved way for the license to airlift intending pilgrims from Minna to the holy land, an exercise which was last done five years ago.

The State Amirul Hajj and Emir of Kagara, Alhqji Ahmed Attahiru Gunna II, expressed gratitude to Governor Bago for the tireless efforts to ensure safe airlifting of intending pilgrims.

Salamau Farouk and Mallam Muhammad Muhammad who are part of the intending pilgrims to be airlifted in the first batch, appreciated the Governor for all his support and promised to be of good conduct.

Meanwhile, 3,223 intending pilgrims from Niger State are expected to be airlifted for this year’s hajj exercise with 8 flights scheduled for their airlift.

Five persons were confirmed to have been killed in attacks that occurred on Wednesday in two separate communities in Taraba State. The attacks took place in Gashaka and Wukari local government councils. While that of Gashaka that led to the killing of three persons occurred in Mayo-Sabere in Mai-Idanu ward, the Wukari incident which claimed two farmers, took place in the Rafin-Kada community. Those killed in Gashaka are Mallam Adamu Yahya, 70, Abdu Yahaya, 52 and Nuhu Yahya, 42. The identities of the two farmers could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report. Wukari council chairman, Ismaila Dauda, who made the confirmation, told DAILY POST that the attack on the farmers was carried out by Tiv militias. “It is true; two persons were killed while working in their farms by Tiv militias. I pray God Almighty will grant them eternal rest and comfort us all in Jesus’ name,” he stated. While urging the people of the community to distance themselves from acts that would lead to reprisal attacks, the leadership of the council in collaboration with the security operatives, he said, were working round the clock to track down the militias. “May I seize this opportunity to appeal to all the good people of Wukari not to take laws into their hands and allow the security agencies to investigate this issue and come up with their findings,” he begged. Sources from Gashaka council, who spoke with our reporter, said apart from the three persons killed, several people also sustained various degrees of injuries. They also blamed the rangers of the Gumti National Park for the attack in Gashaka. Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Kwache confirmed the incidents. “It was confirmed that two persons were killed in Wukari and three in Gashaka,” he disclosed. The cases, according to her, “are still under investigation and efforts are on top gear to apprehend the culprits.”
