Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified simply as Chinyere.
The Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday at the State Police Headquarters, GRA, Enugu. He said Emmanuel was arrested at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, following information that he had allegedly killed the woman.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on September 19, 2026, following an argument between the suspect and the deceased over allegations concerning the source of an HIV infection. The suspect reportedly told investigators that he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death.
Ndukwe said the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment. The odour from the decomposing body reportedly alerted neighbours, who forced their way into the apartment and apprehended Emmanuel before the arrival of the police.
The police spokesperson said the suspect was subsequently rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division. The remains of the deceased were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts were ongoing to establish her identity and trace her relatives.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the suspect is arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution when visiting people and to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements.
A video circulating on social media and seen by our correspondent reportedly showed a man with blood stains around his nose surrounded by several people, followed by footage showing the discovery of what appeared to be the decomposing remains of a woman inside the apartment. The circumstances surrounding the footage could not be independently verified.
