The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for the outcome of investigations into the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address identified concerns and provide lasting solutions.
In a statement, Speaker Abbas said the investigation should examine issues surrounding congestion in custodial centres, operational guidelines, the rights of suspects and the welfare of persons in custody.
He also called for transparency and accountability in the investigation, stressing that justice must be served to the deceased and must be seen by the public to have been served.
According to him, openness in the process would help address concerns surrounding the incident and restore public confidence in the investigation.
The Speaker expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the Niger State Government over the deaths.
He urged relevant authorities to ensure that lessons from the investigation are used to strengthen the treatment and welfare of persons in custody and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Earlier this week, the minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo inaugurated an independent 10 man committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the detained miners, insisting that Nigerians deserve to know the truth.

Tunji-Ojo warned that any attempt to destroy or conceal evidence, intimidate witnesses, or obstruct this investigation will be treated as a serious offence against the nation and will not be tolerated.
