The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, accusing the administration of worsening the country’s economic situation.
Atiku made the call on Thursday in Akure, Ondo State, during a reception organised for former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, who formally joined the ADC alongside his supporters.
The former Vice President said the gathering was a welcome event rather than a campaign rally, adding that the ADC would return to Ondo State to unveil its programmes ahead of the election. He said the party, if elected, would seek to restore fuel subsidy and strengthen security across the country.
Atiku also criticised the APC administration over the economy, contrasting its performance with what he described as the economic achievements recorded between 1999 and 2007, when he served as Vice President. He consequently called on Nigerians to vote against the ruling party in 2027.
He further urged ADC supporters to mobilise voters and ensure the protection of their votes during the elections, citing the August 2026 Osun governorship election as an example of voter mobilisation and vote protection. INEC declared Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of that election, with the ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, finishing third.
Meanwhile, the ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, who was represented by the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, called on party members to commence grassroots mobilisation and support ADC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Jegede, who contested the Ondo governorship election on the PDP platform in 2016 and 2020, said his decision to join the ADC was influenced by unemployment, hardship and what he described as worsening economic conditions in the country. He said his supporters had moved with him and pledged to mobilise across the state for the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
