The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has conferred its Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title on the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, in recognition of his contributions to occupational health, safety and environmental standards.
The National President of NISCN, Engr. John Obajimi, presented the award and professional title to Mojola on behalf of the council, describing the recognition as a reflection of his leadership and contributions to advancing Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
According to the council’s National Executive Council and members, Mojola was honoured for his “visionary leadership, outstanding dedication and impactful contributions” to safety regulation, advocacy and institutional development. NISCN noted that he is the first recipient of the Senior Safety Advocate title and is consequently entitled to use the designation “SSA” before his name.
The recognition comes against the backdrop of several safety initiatives implemented by the Lagos State Safety Commission under Mojola’s leadership, covering occupational safety, emergency preparedness, public safety and risk management.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mojola led the Commission’s safety assessment and auditing efforts as businesses, schools, religious institutions and hospitality establishments prepared to reopen. The Commission introduced safety protocols and a registration process for establishments seeking approval to resume operations safely.
The Commission also institutionalised the 4Es safety framework — Evaluation, Education, Engagement and Enforcement — to strengthen risk identification, stakeholder education, community engagement and regulatory compliance across both formal and informal sectors.
Under Mojola, the Commission has intensified safety interventions in the liquefied petroleum gas sector through training and monitoring of gas retailers, cylinder handlers and plant operators, with emphasis on preventing gas explosions and fire incidents.
In the education sector, the Commission has promoted school safety initiatives covering safety awareness, emergency preparedness, fire drills and risk assessments. Similar sensitisation efforts have been extended to artisans and workers in informal sectors, including market operators, mechanics, transport workers and construction workers.
The Commission has also expanded professional safety training for operational personnel, managers and executives, while conducting inspections and risk assessments at high-risk facilities such as construction sites, industrial facilities, event venues and commercial establishments. Establishments found violating safety requirements are subjected to regulatory sanctions.
Its interventions further cover food establishments and public events, where safety, hygiene, emergency preparedness and crowd-management measures are monitored. During festive periods, the Commission collaborates with emergency and fire authorities on safety campaigns in major commercial centres.
At the community level, the Commission has also promoted emergency preparedness through training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid and basic emergency response.
The NISCN recognition highlights Mojola’s role in advancing safety advocacy, regulatory compliance and a stronger safety culture through the Lagos State Safety Commission.
