The Independent National Electoral Commission has directed its officials in the North-West to close operational gaps, strengthen neutrality and address weaknesses that could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, gave the directive on Monday in Kaduna during the Commission’s North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 General Election.
The engagement forms part of INEC’s six-zone national tour to assess its level of preparedness, identify challenges affecting field operations and develop practical solutions ahead of the elections.
Amupitan said the exercise was aimed at strengthening the foundations of the electoral process, noting that the success of elections was largely determined at the grassroots, particularly at Local Government Areas, Registration Area Centres and polling units.
He urged staff to use the engagement to identify practical challenges in their respective areas and work with the Commission’s headquarters to resolve them before election day.
The INEC chairman said the Commission was building on lessons learnt from recent elections as it prepares for the larger national assignment in 2027. He also warned electoral officials against partisan conduct and administrative negligence.
Amupitan stressed that the neutrality and professionalism of field personnel would be crucial to sustaining public confidence in the electoral process.
